A TERRIFYING TALE

OF
DARK ACADEMIA
AND
THE SUCCESSFUL QUEST FOR IMMORTALITY

A Dark Matter Novel-in-Stories
In progress

THE THURLOW FAMILY HAS BEEN HAVING STRANGE EXPERIENCES.

In Los Angeles, Tom Thurlow is haunted by a recurring nightmare that begins to intrude into his waking life during a frantic week of deadlines at his marketing job. His brother Peter sees a strange man when he looks in the mirror. Their parents, Helen and Thomas, discover an abandoned estate on a mountain near their home.

Once owned by the famous Tawaney family, the estate’s sprawling, secluded house seems to open portals to ghosts and changing timelines. After Helen is nearly lured through a spatial rupture there, she discovers a further Tawaney connection: an old university classmate is now head of the prestigious Tawaney Institute at their alma mater, Edgestow University in England.

Their experiences attract the attention of Edgestow, where another, more secretive drama is unfolding. The Tawaney Institute has discovered the key to extending human life. There is only one problem: the longer its subjects live, the more their minds begin to unravel.

The Institute begins searching its alumni records for something science has yet to manufacture: a consciousness capable of surviving an unnaturally prolonged human lifespan. Certain families appear to possess the answer.

The Thurlows are among them.

As scientific research, hidden histories and seemingly supernatural events converge, Ink of the Palimpsest uncovers traces of the divine events first glimpsed in Isis Chrysalis. A novel about death as a threshold between worlds, it asks what might happen if humanity succeeds in defeating death in purely physical terms, without understanding what death actually is.

Ink of the Palimpsest is my answer to C. S. Lewis’s That Hideous Strength, in which I reimagine questions of scientific ambition, institutional power and the boundaries of human life in the twenty-first century.

AN EXCERPT FROM

INK OF THE PALIMPSEST

THE KINGDOM

OF THE SQUIRRELS

The squirrels stopped their racket. Her heart dropped. An uncanny silence surrounded her. It welcomed her. Reality shifted. In the back of her mind, just as she could sense the thought forms of the oak tree down on the trail, she heard the thought form: Helen.

Out of the corner of her eye, she could make out a young man, dignified, in a suit, with a pocket watch, his slim moustache angled as he smiled, leaning against the pillar at the entrance to the chapel.

“Not today, King of the Squirrels. No. Not me. Not staying here.”

He angled his head slightly. Helen.

She began to recite to herself, “Our Father. Who art in Heaven.” Helen. Stay. “Hallowed be Thy – ugh.” She jammed the phone in her pocket. “Name.” Helen. The air around her flickered with strange lights.

“Unhh. Thy kingdom come. Thy will – urgh.” The air grew dry, static, as though an electrical current was running on and off through the atmosphere on a switch. Everything was frozen, so still that the whole unreal scene was there – and not there – there – and not there. On – off – on – off. One world. The other world. One dimension. The other. Clear and free in the darkness. Bound and contained in reality.

Her head began to throb. “No-no-no. Thy will be done!” It took supreme effort to remember the prayer. The words did not want to stay in her head.

“On Earth, on Earth…” she sighed. The words wanted to slip off into the darkness, into the quiet, with that other voice which said:

Do not worry, Helen. Today is a good day.
