Dark Matter literature focuses on the radical restoration of the silenced perspective. Dark Matter is a metaphor in my work for ‘othering’ or scapegoating in human relationships. This is a serious, chronic problem in human nature. One might almost argue that societies and authoritative structures cannot exist without it.

 

Contrary to the assumption that only weaker groups and individuals are victimized, exclusion can be inflicted upon anyone, anywhere, at any time. Yet the excluded individual or group still has a viewpoint and I have for several years examined people or narratives who are pushed into the ‘blind spot’ of history.

 

In terms of evolving the concept, in the 2010s, I developed a continuity bible for a conflicted and badly-projected-upon DC Comics character, Tara Markov. This series culminated with my conclusions about ‘the female as subtext,’ a theme which helped me develop my thoughts on using Dark Matter as a metaphor for a whole direction in new literary expression.

 

This study also helped me to understand how to write serialized fiction. My first foray into this method of writing fiction was Vampire Daddy, which you can read here. 

 

The Terra continuity bible, as well as my formal academic studies of the imperial history of minorities at the doctoral level at Oxford, informed fictional themes within Vampire Daddy. The characters are constantly trying to piece together a clear history of their own lives and general historical events, out of a mish mash of fragmented memories and contested official records, all of which are suspect. This theme of reconstructed continuous history, including the restoration of silenced perspectives, is one of the creative expressions which attacks the ‘blind spot’ upon which flawed consensus realities and conformity rest.
